MN Aurora is a semi-pro soccer (futbol if ya nasty😏) club here in Minnesota. They are 100% community-owned, and aside from being a kickass team, they don't shy away from speaking on important issues. I was tapped to design a scarf for their "Black Lives Matter: Amplifying Black Voices" game. The theme was celebrating the varying Black experience along with the joy, discovery, and wonder that Black folks bring to the table every day.
The Process
I had free rein to design the scarf, except for a few brand standards and the use of the team crest. The stylized font used for "BLM" and "BLACK" has the power of Venus Williams, the energy of Flo Jo, and the poise of Simone Biles. The brand guidelines state that the team’s Flash Red "should be used sparingly for maximum impact", so I employed it for this scarf.
What started as a choice between a few of the strongest concepts I came up with, ended with the client saying we could do different designs on each side. So I retooled the scarf to have A and B sides that work separately or together.
